Organize Using the People's Budget

Although the Administration may not release its 2018 budget proposals until May, the nomination of budget extremist Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) to head the powerful Office of Management and Budget is cause for alarm.

Mulvaney is a co-founder of the right wing “Freedom Caucus” in the House. He voted to shut down the government and risk a first ever US default if Congress didn’t repeal the Affordable Care Act. Last year, the Freedom Caucus scuttled the draconian “Ryan Budget” in the House, which proposed $6 trillion in cuts to domestic programs, because it didn’t go far enough.

Instead, the Freedom Caucus advocates for $10 trillion in cuts over the next decade proposed by the right wing Heritage Foundation. These include:

  • $3.8 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, SSI and SNAP (food stamps) for the disabled and poor
  • $1.7 trillion in cuts to Medicare
  • $633 billion in cuts to Social Security
  • $2.5 trillion in cuts to domestic programs

The Freedom Caucus/Heritage cuts to domestic programs are 50% below the 14% “sequester” cuts voted by Congress in 2011. As just one example, they would “block grant” all HUD rental housing subsidies to five million seniors, disabled and low income families to the states, cutting 10% per year until all funds are terminated--throwing millions of people onto the streets.

Although the Trump budget is now not expected until May, it is likely to cut somewhere between the $6 trillion in cuts sought by House Speaker Ryan and the $10 trillion proposed in the Freedom Caucus/Heritage budget supported by Rep. Mulvaney. Other Trump campaign promises--dramatic increases in Pentagon and “infrastructure” spending, huge tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires--will only increase pressure to destroy these domestic programs and slash Social Security and Medicare, despite Trump’s pledges to not cut benefits to current beneficiaries.

Sample Questions:

1) I’m a retiree in your District counting on Social Security and Medicare to survive in the years ahead. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s nominee for the White House Budget office, has voted to shut down the government, throw the US into default, and cut $10 trillion from Social Security, Medicare and countless vital programs for the poor and middle class. What will you do to block Mulvaney, and keep Trump’s tiny hands off our Social Security and Medicare?

Will you instead support the Peoples Budget proposed by the House Progressive Caucus, to increase Social Security by lifting the earnings cap, and protect Medicare and other vital programs, cut Pentagon waste, tax the rich and invest in jobs?

2) I’m a retiree in your District counting on Social Security and Medicare to survive in the years ahead. Trump’s nominee for the White House Budget Office, Rep. Mick Mulvaney, has vowed to slash my benefits and destroy funding for health care, housing and other vital programs. What will you do to block him, and keep Trump’s tiny hands off my Social Security and Medicare!

3) I’m a senior citizen in your District who relies on senior housing supported by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, HUD, to get by. Without it, there’s no way I could afford the high market rents in on just my Social Security check. Trump’s nominee for the White House Budget office, Rep. Mick Mulvaney, has proposed to wipe out all HUD rental housing over the next decade. This amounts to a death sentence for me and five million other families who rely on HUD to keep a roof over our head.

Will you block Mulvaney, and oppose any budget proposals that do not keep us in our homes? Will you instead support the Peoples Budget proposed by the House Progressive Caucus, to protect housing and other vital programs, increase--not cut--Social Security, cut Pentagon waste, tax the rich and invest in jobs?
